e-Gram - Secure and Green Communications

When we send a snail mail or receive them, there is not much of spam involved. This is because of the cost of the postage stamp and cover. Even then some unwanted snail mail may come in rarely.

The cost of sending an e-mail should fall on the sender, not the receiver or the mail transport system. A way - more like 100 free sending per day, above that nominal charges. This may not work well as most of this spam is sent unconventionally. If routers and servers get smart, they can block spam, then it may be like charging a Toll on the Data Highway. That may choke the net for normal users.

e-Gram - Secure and Green Communications

So a new communications method called e-Gram. This imposes the cost on the sender, it offers protection to the receiver and does not clog the net.

When i send an e-Gram, it is a string of not more than 24 characters which is the subject or summary, only text, no media. 24 ASCII characters.

Example -

Quotation for 20 Nos. of Storage Bins Q2341

is the e-Gram sent to sam.acme.tel - where sam is the name and acme the firm, service provider or home account.

Only 24 letters and no media (embedded or attached) is sent, so the transit cost and bandwidth reduced.

When i sent this e-Gram, it created a secure page on my host with the full letter and media. This page is protected and can only be seen by a browser or client when authenticated or logged in.

When the person gets the e-Gram, his spam filters after checking the subject and sender may mark it clean. When he clicks on the more link, the private page is visited at my host/provider. The link has the authentication for that page. If it looks like spam, he will not click the more link.

As only e-Grams move from server to server, the bandwidth and storage load is less. Only valid e-Grams are visited. This way Media and Executables can never be sent by an e-Gram. The person who accidentally visits a spam e-Gram will not download any media or binary, as this will need his action.

The eGram Client can have have a two Inbox system. One Green Inbox for known, verified or approved senders. Another Red Inbox for Unknown Senders.

Computing for Web and Web for Computing

The Desktop Computer also called IBM Compatible PC and the Later Laptop/Notebook as SMD and CMOS technology developed. These both computer configurations formed as computing evolved with electronics manufacturing technologies. Networking and Web came a bit later.

Computers developed more for data processing. Then came the Internet, with it came a new purpose for the computer.


Computing for Web and Web for Computing

Now a new age, low energy age. All Electronics has to be frugal in resource usage. Hardware very light, Software must be Network Friendly, Client server type. Solutions cost-effective, consumer friendly.

This alone is sustainable. This applies to data processing too. If the cost of a solution is more than just living with a problem; That solution is unnecessary. We have to find a better way.

A Computer has to be Built for the Web and the Web has to be Built for this Computer. This is needed for Communications, Education, Books, Knowledge, Shopping and Business.

Most Important Specs. - Low Power, Wireless, Portable, Secure, Simple. The Browser is the Most and Only Important part of this Computer.

It has to be Maintenance Free Computing (client side). This applies to two main branches -
  1. Enterprise Computing or Data Processing or Office Computing
  2. Consumer Computing or Home Computing or Multimedia-Games-Entertainment
The clients and servers of both have to be designed in different ways. It has to be Web or Network Centric, Energy Conscious, Cost Effective, serviceable, maintainable and sustainable.

HandHeld Green Cloud Computing

There is only one Green computing, That is HandHeld Client Terminal on a Remote Web-OS. Web Applications, Netbooks, Tablets are moving towards that Direction. Here are some snippets of mine in various blog posts from 2002 to now. to emphasize what is in my mind.

HandHeld Green Cloud Computing

Once i saw that many computers in organization were turned on most of the time, and hardly being used actively for more than 3-4 hours a day. Some times it was just a visual console. In another place, something i saw which got me worried, many computers were on, some were sending Yahoo Greetings, some were using email or chat and others were just on the Net. no desktop computing.

So much energy, watts, cpu power, and harddisk space for Internet/Intranet only activity. This was not green, reliable, portable or sustainable. If you were to use a cad or graphics package, dtp or multimedia authoring, gaming, then i agree you need a desktop computer, with all the Juice, the entire gamut of Bells, Whistles and Nixies. Not for intranet clients and internet use.

Enterprise computing too, with intranet cloud coupled with the internet cloud need to go green. Desktop computers should not be used for business data/information management. Pre-Configured clients like tablets, even for form filling and report view. In fact after all this business automation, form filling still remains, later entered into the system. A tablet has to be the form, the form has to be scribbled on the Tablet Screen or the mailed Forms scanned and OCR'ed.

Computer manufacturers will still have a good trade for Intranet and Web clouds. Developers, Gamers, Programmers and Graphic Designers will still love the desktop.

Web Applications on Dumb Terminals

Office Workflow Visualization, Creating Live Dashboards or Visual Office Terminals; Simple Front end for Google Apps and Other Business Processing and Monitoring Software in the Background.I would like to say more in context of my science. It could be a Web Based LabView, but for Office and Business Apps.

Web Applications simplify office automation to a high degree, without adding more complexity in system admin and process maintenance that exist in legacy solutions. -

Netbooks Tablets

There is a Better way, here it is. Make a switch. A Green, Mobile and Practical Device.

  • Virtual www office, Entry only with identity - Open-ID, Shows as Avatar in Meeting Room.
  • Seven Inch Long, Golden Rectangle Size Device, Inch or Less Thick, Color LCD.
  • Can store and read PDF-MP3-Midi-xml-jpeg and very popular file formats.
  • Can easily show as a drive on all OS, emulating standard popular external drive.
  • Open Hardware, Linux Gadget, Battery Operated, Wifi-USB Interfaces.
  • Email and Text Messaging, Audio Video Messaging, Shared fies or folder.
SWF and FLV formats can make Interactive Books. The e of a eReader could be the Interactive Elements in a book or call it iReader after integrating Multi-Media. Tutorials and Stories come with sound too. Hence SWF and FLV can be a evolutionary step from Cellulose Based Info-Media. HTML5 !! tooo.

It has to be good for people who travel around the globe, practical and sensible usage of internet, for information or data communications over Handheld devices. The greater need is jitter-glitch-free online experience on mobile devices including netbooks over a large user base.

Multidevice accessible, Online office webapps and communication-collaboration tools; need us to be online and capable wherever we are. An Untethered Web Office is possible only with a broadband wireless network. Home, office, travel or In-between, you can continue the productive, creative or research work.

Cloud Computing - The Future of Software - 2

Take an example of a "Speech to Text" Software installed on a PC, these have several limitations and a fuzzy learning process. It works with people with known dialects, good pronunciation and proper language syntax. This does not work well with some, as they are not patient, and cannot adapt to the system's behavior.

So if you move the entire Speech to Text software online, the servers process the audio, using semi-automated means, learn the language of the user and build a specific audio profile online. This will mean some human interaction in the learning process. The main core software along with some operators managing the learning process will make Speech to Text, easy for all.

As the Software is on the servers, it can be updated frequently by the engineers. The dialect database and patterns, can be built during beta and also with every new customer audio profile. The dialect, pronunciation and language templates can easily evolve as the user profile databases are online. Future users may need a learning process which is short, as they have to only match a existing profile template.

Lastly, there is nothing to Install or Uninstall. no Registry to backup. Works from any computer in any country, but only Online. Once in a way, you need to backup your database-setting from your online account on to a CD and keep it very safe.

Cloud Computing - The Future of Software - 1

Let us imagine an apartment block of Pensioners, Kids, White Collar Workers and Non-Tech Managers. They need to use mail, create and print some docs, use social tools for family and friends. They have less tech abilities, they can use the buttons or wizards. They will not venture into the menu or settings. These are the Real Consumer user base .

Cloud Computing - The Home Cloud

Anybody who has setup windows or linux computers for them will know that for every issue, they need assistance. Then the installation, updates, learning new software and security issues keeps many from using anything other than a few games and checking mail. Only the Tech Savvy or trained personnel, are able to use the full capabilities of the computer and the applications. They can also manage to keep it updated and these form a small percentage, the Skilled user base . Most software and computers are tailored for this small section, the Skilled user base. They include those that were trained or self-educated.

Cloud Computing - The Home Cloud

Only when studies of usability and ergonomics improved, this problem has become more widely understood. The assumption that the Consumer user base will get converted into the Skilled User base, to adapt to Tech user systems (hardware software systems) is a myth. The consumer computing systems have to develop, this enables computers for everyone, to its full potential.

In hardware, the USB is so easy on the user compared to the Serial RS232 Port. The USB is a consumer friendly port.

The majority want to use the computer like they use a tape recorder or toaster. They cannot update, install or even backup and restore docs-media that needs to be preserved. Many of these people drop the use of computers and switch back to conventional methods. The learning, adapting time and cost is not feasible for them.

Let us Imagine a little Kid having a Touch Screen Wireless Tablet Computer with no controls whatsoever, Not even a Power Switch. The father uses a technology similar to VNC to stream basic Flash Alphabets and Numbers tutorials with sounds and also talks with his kid from office over the same device on a small inset frame. He also switches to some edutainment games when the kid has had enough of the learning. He is able to monitor and educate the child from the server. Extrapolate the system-admin to the father or teacher and all consumers to children.

Can a kid, update a patch to address a security issue. He may switch to an Abacus.

The OS and Programs Reside in the Server-Cluster or the Web-Cloud, The Software is maintained by a team of professionals. A client VNC type of tablet with firmware is with the consumers, They use their tablets or netbooks to login and use the Online Software Services.

Web Apps and cloud computing are in the right direction, Ideal high speed VNC like usage may take many evolutionary steps, in fact,it is something the computing scientists have to figure out.

Cloud Computing the Cerebral Six Pack

Grid computing among servers is fine. But the concept of networking unused computers and using that for crunching large numbers is not practical. This is mainly because it is not green (power consumption). Such ideas are not economical for the purpose served. Not Sustainable.

What we need is like a Class AB Audio Amplifier. Deliver Power on demand, or scale up/down (hardware switching) on demand, efficiently. This is only possible in client-server systems. Cloud Computing is the way. The clients are Low Power Multi-Media Terminals. The Modules in the Servers can turn on, as demand increases, as more people login or compute more.

What i feel, think or understand. May not be practical or implementable today. May free home user from lot of admin tasks. Web applications and Services have made it possible already to some extent. When user has only the LCD Monitor and Keyboard to manage, No OS or updates or even Virus.

Let me assume the currency is in blips and a Cloudlet is owned by a SSP - Software Services Provider. He whips out a virtual pc on the cloudlet and let you use it. The power of a super computer can be accessed on the Tablet or Netbook in your Knapsack.

Information or concept is for thinking and learning, educate and entertain, some are already being used and applied in the web. Some ideas are to promote Tangential Thinking, this enables you to flex the tendons of your brain; who knows, one day you may develop a cerebral six pack
